1. Memories Don’t Die
When you hear this album you will begin to understand & believe in all the Tory Lanez hype…This album is nothing short of sonically perfect. Released right at the beginning of 2018 –March 2– it’s important this gem doesn’t get lost in the “junk”.
Cocky Lanez plays with different sounds & melodies that honestly only him can pull off or get away with.
4 Me – Tory Lanez would literally give you an eargasm. On Pieces (ft. 50 Cent) –Tory Lanez secured the best 50 Cent feature of the year while delivering cinematography imagery through the administration of straight classic fire bars.
We would say the most interesting take away from this album is how Tory’s sounds travels all throughout the black diaspora.
2. Dirty Computer
This whole visual album is arguably one of the best bodies of work put out this year… so much so that it has been nominated by the Grammy’s for Album of the Year – whatever weight that holds to you.
This 48:37 long project is nothing short of a masterpiece & even each song cut individually by itself still tells a full story too.
Janelle Monáe out did herself & she deserves a Pulitzer Prize for this. However, this won’t be the first time a black woman was slept on.
On Make Me Feel – Janelle Monáe allegedly got some input from music legend Prince himself; who was actually her mentor.
The imagery for Pynk (ft. Grimes) – Janelle Monáe actually raised the bar for music videos this year. Every single image portrayed is sending a specific message.
But our personal favorite would have to be; I Like That – Janelle Monáe
The much-anticipated Queen album from a Queen: Nicki Minaj. A lot of music critics actually say this may be her best body of work just yet… this dispute is also in-house because I’m the Best – Nicki Minaj is still the rap motivation song.
Argue with your faves.
Barbie Dreams – Nicki Minaj; you gotta love the relevant word play as Nicki lyrically pokes fun at her fellow colleagues in the industry. An alleged remake from a throwback old raw Nicki song. Regardless it smacks!
& it is still relevant.
Okay, Leikeli47‘s album you can hear it better than we would ever be able to tell you. Like most artist highlighted; she’s literally in a league of her own by herself on her lane that she built & it actually works!
Some songs on the album are introspective with Jay-z & Lauryn Hill echelon bars like Hoyt And Schermerhorn – Leikeli47; the masked master has truly mastered her own lane. Tic Boom – Leikeli47 makes you want to bust your fiercest Teyana Taylor catwalk down the runway or even. Vogue…shout out! the LGBTQ community!
Queer is also fair.
Girl blunt –Leikeli47
This song with the black ass bomb visuals may be the general pops favorite as it did make a feature on the hit HBO blackity black show Insecure.
5. Lady Lady
Masego’s debut album; Lady Lady. What does it sound like? well, people are wondering who really is new the king of R&B.
Masego fuses Jazz, R&B, Neo-Soul & Funk! It’s what the kids are calling Future Soul…stay tuned for Afro-futurism playlist coming soon. Lady Lady is actually what we all thought Bryson Tiller meant when he released his “trap soul”.
It begins with Masego on the keyboard. Jack of most trades Masego man plays the keyboard, saxophone, & the drums.
He has also developed quite the versatile vocal skills. You can hear him through the short freestyle intro to I Had a Vision- Masego
There’s an in house dispute on this one too?
Who do you think was inspired or is there any? with Glow (ft. Kanye West) – Drake.
But what song had us singing non-stop all year? Lavish Lullaby – Masego
Our next runner up? Prone –Masego flexes his cadence control, from singing to rapping & right back to singing again.
Trust us. once your ears get a taste of this art work? It would leave you craving for more. With seamless transitions, this really is a body of work created by an artist who seems to have developed a deep relationship with himself within himself.
We look forward to more of his future works.
6. Tina Snow
Young Tina Snow! With enough wordplay for all you hoes! Freak Nasty – Megan Thee Stallion
No but seriously, put this album on rotation before you pay for that expensive ticket to that self-help/self esteem seminar with repetitive information your mum could tell you for free.
Hot girl – Megan Thee Stallion is literally a boss bitch anthem urging you not the sweat the small stuff & chase a bag ! We stan a new age womanist.
Cocky Af – Megan Thee Stallion we just can’t get enough of this Houston Hottie with a twang & pimp bars that would have you engrossed.
The alté King himself released his first full body of work this year. Odunsi( The Engine) the pack leader of the new wave of alternative out of the box Nigerian youth. Divine (ft Davido) – Odunsi (The Engine) is liberating the Nigerian youth through music, one out of the box tune at a time. The sound of the diaspora.
wanted you – Odunsi(The Engine) is sampled –slowed down– from Uncle Snoop’s Sexual Seduction.
Watch the video above, one could even draw references from the inspiration that probably gave Odunsi the aesthetic for his album cover too.
Music in the black diaspora includes a plethora of sounds, however, when you hear it you can truly feel it.
Funfact: the first song Burna Boy has on this project; More Life – Burna Boy is sly continuation to the end of; Get It Together (ft. Black Coffee & Jorja Smith) – Drake off of his collaborative project titled…More Life!
Aye ! They work together…We love it when the blacks link up!
Ph City Vibration – Burna Boy is a different sound & you simply haven’t caught this type of vibe. An ode to his ethnic heritage & where Burna Boy spent his childhood. You can hear influences from the throwback galala wave of 2006 that hit the Nigerian music scene. Which was really just the musically mashup of the diaspora in the Caribbean & African music at the time.
Why we love Burna Boy so much is how seamlessly he stays authentic. Retaining his culture while still making music that you will enjoy cause this nigga ain’t no sellout!
But really Fela Anikulapo Kuti for some of the flow inspo.
9. Silk Canvas
Ivana & Jessica Nwokike are the two who make the group VanJess.
This year the Nigerian-American duo released this healing album; healing music to de-stress & also bop your head too.
Another Lover – VanJess
It’s interesting to watch how music –& the internet…duh– is probably one of the most powerful tools instrumental for the unification of the negro.
But we digress; Addicted – VanJess
is an ode to J-lo. Sampled off of ; If you had my love – Jennifer Lopez
We think VanJess wore it better ! 😉
10. DUMMY BOY
Would 2018 have really been 2018 without social media’s favorite troll to hate/love: Tekashi69. From Gummo to FeFe, the young artist has found time in between jail time –& court dates– to drop a great album.
With an album intro featuring the streets favorite Hot Boy- Bobby Shmurda. To star-studded A list features like Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, Lil baby, Tory Lanez, A Boogie, & a few others. 6ix9ine put together an album of bangers guaranteed to have any party jumping. All while avoiding the “Treyway” affiliation we have come to know him for chanting.
KIKA is a great example of how the rappers crowd adapted New York crunk flow.
Our favorite track on the project is the star-studded MAMA featuring rap royalty Kanye West & Queen; Nicki Minaj. Certified Banger!
If you’re looking for new music for your sweat out gym playlist then this is the album for you.
11. Lost & Found
When this delicate songstress first debuted on the music scene she caught a lot of heat or hate for allegedly running on the coattails of colorism. However Jorja Smith has proven to herself why she’s here to stay & anyone listening to her actual body of work knows exactly why too.
So lose yourself from playing yourself to February 3rd- Jorja Smith
12. Whack World
This whole album was a freaking tease! But it’s one we can get behind & can’t get enough off.
The Whack World visual project would only take 15:48 minutes of your time on earth.
Each song runs for about 1:00 or less.
It’s the end of the year & even if you had something better to do, we all know good music pairs well with everything. Hungry Hippo – Tierra Whack was the ~50 second song that made us realize why Tierra is right there in the new crew for who’s next.
is another song that is a snippet of Tierra showing off her versatility while shitting on most of your mainstream faves. Catch a vibe with this concise art project. Tierra Whack is having fun with her craft & minding her business.
Let Eri Ife & Remmy Baggins show you the way. Their 20 min Yllw EP is simply the way to a new world. Every single song is a winner singular song & it is unjust to highlight only a few; Bastien’s Interlude included.
What does LasGidi (Lagos City) sound like?
Simply hit play! to the track; My City.
These two artists came together & truly co-created a audible art piece that even now is so much more. But seriously don’t just simply take our word for it, press play.
Obviously he’s the 6 god for reason so he would make our 2018 replay list because the end of the day we love this diaspora culture vulture. He has truly mastered the art of tasteful assimilation. & honestly he does it well, he also introduces his huge mainstream audience to what the new emerging wave is.
The whole album is what you expect it to be…fire, introspection, & growth.
Elevate- Drake is an introspective drake.
In My Feelings – Drake is a Drake providing the necessary tunes needed for jamation at the club. This song was so fire it caused a social media movement, most thanks to the Shiggy show.
God’s Plan – Drake is the rapping sing song. Drake with the bars that you & your boys can dream with.
